Bhitarkanika national park is a RAMSAR site present in the Kendrapada district of Odisha and is the second largest mangrove forest after the Sunderbans. It's splendid beauty can't be expressed in words until you personally visit the place. You will get different boats from the Khola side. You can visit the tourist office at the entrance and know more about different types of mangrove. There are large number of crocodiles from 1 ft in size to 12 feet will be basking under sun or swimming across the river. During your journey, the boat will stop near Dangamala, where you can visit Crocodile breeding center and museum while walking inside the mangrove forest. Best time to visit is in the mornings and in winter season.
It is a very good place to sight the giant Salt Water Crocodile, some growing to 23 feet in length, along with other reptiles like the Water Monitor Lizard and the King Cobra. Spotted deers and wild boars are abundant in the park and can be spotted at all the major locations. Eight varieties of Kingfishers are found here and can be spotted along the many creeks and riverines within the park. The boat ride from Khola to Dangmal or vice versa is highly recommended. Khola is one of the gateways into the park. This is along an artificial creek and it passes through dense mangrove forest providing a glimpse into the estuarine ecosystem and its wealth of fauna. The best time to travel through this creek is early morning or before sunset.
This is a wonderful place to spend a few nights, away from the hustle bustle of city life. The rooms and amenities are basic but clean and comfortable. The food is great. The best part is that it is still so maintained that wild deers, boars, porcupines and monitor lizards come near the abodes and have to be guarded against. Crocodile spotting is just a few minutes away on a boat. They are really big and can give even the bravest person a fright. There is a hatchery very near the cottages which is a wonder. The most wondrous things are the 2 White Crocodiles kept in 2 enclosures within the park area. They are called Gori and Mali. All in all a very good place to visit.
